X-ray

A non-invasive diagnostic tool used to detect abnormalities within the internal organs.

X-rays and ultrasounds allow us to see many things we would not otherwise know about our cats. They can be used to evaluate almost any organ in the body, including the heart, lungs, and abdominal organs, as well as the bones. Radiographs and ultrasounds are one of the best tools we can use to help diagnose a cat’s medical issues.

Being that our pets cannot directly tell us what a problem may be, having these tests performed is often helpful in offering up a clearer picture of the problem, so our veterinary team can come up with the appropriate diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan.

What is the technology used and training of the staff?

At West Hill Animal Clinic, we have the ability to take digital radiographs of your cat. Minimal amounts of radiation are required to obtain a diagnostic image of your cat. All of our technicians and ACAs are properly trained to ensure your cat is handled with care, to ensure diagnostic images are obtained quick and stress-free.

Why does my cat need an x-ray?

Radiographs can be used to evaluate bones as well as the size, shape, and position of many of your cat’s organs. The size of organs is important because some medical conditions—such as kidney, heart, or liver disease—can alter the size of these organs.

The shape and position of your cat’s organs can be altered or distorted by certain medical conditions, including intestinal blockage or cancer. Tumours, depending on their size and location, can also sometimes be detected using radiography.

Radiography can also be used to diagnose bladder stones, broken bones, chronic arthritis, certain spinal cord diseases, and a variety of other conditions. The use of ultrasound is often needed to evaluate conditions in your cat in which x-rays are unable to detect.

As with radiography, it is painless, safe and completely non-invasive. The ultrasound machine sends out sound waves which are then turned into a live picture, where the ultrasonographer can evaluate organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart. Since it is a live moving picture, even blood flow through the heart can be evaluated.

We are able to offer ultrasound services on site. If you feel like your cat has a problem that could benefit from x-rays or ultrasounds, please contact West Hill Animal Clinic and speak with one of our healthcare professionals.

How much do cat x-rays cost?

Cost of radiographs depend on your cat’s symptoms and the number of radiographs that are necessary to take to diagnose their symptoms. Please call West Hill Animal clinic for more information.
