Kitten vaccinations are given at a critical period in the kitten’s life when they are no longer receiving immunity through nursing. These vaccines jump start their immune system to ward off potentially life-threatening disease processes.

When do kittens get their first shots?

At West Hill Animal Clinic, we typically give kittens their first vaccines around 8 weeks of age.

How often does my kitten need vaccines?

As a general rule of thumb, kitten vaccines are administered at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. At this time, core vaccines are given, with the option to start receiving non-core vaccines.

Does my kitten only need core vaccines?

Upon further discussion with your veterinarian, non-core vaccines may also be given at this time, depending on your lifestyle and your cat’s exposure.

Are there any risks associated with vaccines?

Occasionally, some animals will experience mild reactions to vaccines. The most common side effect of being vaccinated is lethargy which typically, only lasts for a day. Other reactions may include vomiting, diarrhea or sometimes even facial swelling. If your cat is experiencing what you may think is a vaccine reaction, please call the clinic for advice on what you should do.
