Breed of the Month: Siberian Forest Cat

The Siberian Forest Cat is the National Cat of Russia as has been in existence for over 1000 years. Siberian Forest Cats are native to the forests of Siberia with a subarctic climate – this would explain the water repellent triple coat that they have. Originally, Siberian Forest Cats were used for hunting mice and rats to help protect the grains and other foods that shopkeepers kept. Nowadays, these stunning, calm natured cats are mainly kept as companions. Siberian Forest Cats are wonderful family cats. They are not shy with strangers, which makes them perfect for a family with children. They are active and playful and can be easily trained to learn tricks or even fetch. Siberian Forest Cats love to jump high and scale anything large. It is suggested to have a tall cat tree for them to play on if you want to avoid them leaping on and off your furniture.

Siberian Forest Cats love the water – whether it is drinking from a water fountain or toilet, or splashing around in the tub, they do enjoy the water. Siberian Forest Cats require their coats to be brushed at least twice a week to prevent tangles or mats. Though not scientifically proven, a lot of people consider Siberian Forest Cats hypoallergenic. Siberians produce much less of the Fel-D1 allergen protein than any other breed. Because of this, the Siberian Forest Cat is a good choice for allergy sufferers. If you are looking for a gorgeous cat who is great with other animals, as well as children and loves attention without being needy, then the Siberian Forest Cat may be the right breed for you!
