Breed of the Month: Maremma

The Maremma originated in Italy. This breed was developed for guarding livestock; specifically sheep against attack from wolves. The Maremma is also great for guarding farmland against predators and unwanted trespassers. The Maremma is an independent working dog, compared to breeds like the Border collie and German shepherd. Maremma’s are great with those who live in the home but perceive visitors as a threat. Since the Maremma is a working dog and is quite vocal, they are not suitable as a pet or for living in a city environment. Since the Maremma was bred to follow herds of sheep as they graze, they need to roam and would not be able to be kept tied up.
