Breed of the Month: Maine Coon

The Maine Coon cat breed dates as far back as the 19^th century and is native to Maine, USA. Maine Coons were primarly used as “mousers” on farms and ships, but are now mainly bred for companionship.

The name Maine Coon originates from its native land (Maine) and its close resemblance to a racoon (Coon). The most common colour combination of the Maine Coon is the brown tabby. Because of its large size and big bushy, ringed tail, some people used to believe that the Maine Coon was the result of breeding a cat with a raccoon – with modern science we know that is not biologically possible. The Maine Coon is often referred to as the “dogs of the cat world” because of how loyal, playful and friendly they can be. They are also very easy to train and are known to love the water. If you are looking for a fun-loving, intelligent kitty who loves to cuddle, then these gentle giants may be perfect for you!

Male: 13-18 lbs.

Female: 8-12 lbs.
